CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia women’s soccer seniors Kristen McNabb (Montville, N.J.) and Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) have been tabbed as preseason All-ACC selections by a vote of the league’s coaches, the conference office announced on Thursday.

Both McNabb, a defender, and Shaffer, a midfielder, were also named to the preseason watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy honoring the top collegiate soccer player each season.

The Cavaliers were picked to finish second in the ACC this season in the preseason vote of the league’s coaches, which was also announced with the preseason honors, amassing a total of 178 points and three first-place votes. Virginia won the ACC regular-season title a year ago with a 9-1-0 mark in league play and advanced to the finals of the ACC Women’s Soccer Championship and the Elite Eight of the NCAA Championships.

McNabb helped anchor a stout back line a year ago and returns to anchor a veteran defense again this season. She scored five goals a year ago, including the game-winner against No. 6 Clemson in the semifinals of the ACC Championships. McNabb was named a second-team NSCAA All-Region selection after helping the Cavaliers post 15 shutouts on the year.

Shaffer earned All-ACC second team honors a year ago after tying for the team lead in goals scored with 14 and finishing second on the team with eight assists. She was also named a second-team NSCAA All-Region selection. Shaffer hit five game-winning goals, including the winners against No. 1 Florida State, national runner-up Duke and at Wake Forest. She also provided the game-winning assists in two matches.

Virginia opens the 2016 home schedule against George Mason on Sunday, Aug. 21. Virginia will host an exhibition match with West Virginia on Sunday, Aug. 14 at Klockner Stadium.
