ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Freshman and senior connected for a victory on Thursday (Aug. 11) as Meghan McCool (Glenside, Pa.) took a pass from Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) and scored to give No. 4 Virginia a 1-0 win over Michigan in exhibition play.

The two squads played three 30-minute periods in the exhibition match hosted by the Wolverines as Virginia closed out its week of training camp on the road.

McCool and Shaffer connected in the 70th minute of play for the only goal of the afternoon in the defensive struggle between the two teams. Both keepers that saw action for the Cavaliers, Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) and Kelsey Kilgore (Glen Allen, Va.), turned away penalty kicks to help preserve the shutout for Virginia.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting West Virginia at 1 p.m. at KlÃÆ’¶ckner Stadium in the final exhibition match of the preseason. Admission to the match is free to the public.

The regular-season kicks off on Friday, Aug. 19, when Virginia will travel to Liberty for the first match of the season at 7 p.m. Virginia opens home play against George Mason on Sunday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m.
