CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 4 Virginia women’s soccer team (1-0-0) will host George Mason at 5 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 21) as the Cavaliers open the home portion of the 2016 schedule.

Virginia is coming off a 4-0 victory on the road at Liberty on Friday night, a match in which senior goalkeeper Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) tied the school record for wins in a career. She can set the school record with a win against the Patriots on Sunday afternoon.

George Mason (1-0-0) is coming off a 2-1 win over Old Dominion on Friday night in its season opener.

The Cavaliers got support from several new faces in the win over the Flames with two freshmen scoring goals and one adding an assist on the third. Allisa Gorzack (Naperville, Ill.) provided the assist, while Meghan McCool (Glenside, Pa.) and Taylor Ziemer (Santa Rosa, Calif.) were the freshmen who scored.

Betsy Brandon (Littleton, Colo), a ACC All-Freshman selection a year ago, scored the game-winner on Friday night to start the scoring for the Cavaliers, while senior Meghan Cox (Springfield, Calif.) capped the scoring.

The Cavaliers return five of the top six goal scorers from last season with midfielder Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) leading the way with 14 goals a year ago. She is joined by seniors Morgan Reuther (Chantilly, Va.), Cox and Kristen McNabb (Montville, N.J.), and junior Veronica Latsko (Venetia, Pa.) in combining for 40 of the squad’s goals last season.

A veteran back line joins Stearns defensively with McNabb, Cox and senior Tina Iordanou (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) all as returning starters from last season. The unit helped post 15 shutouts and allowed only 12 goals last season.
