CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Former Virginia women’s tennis player Julia Elbaba’s (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) run at the US Open National Playoff ended in the semifinals on Sunday as she fell to second-seeded Sanaz Marand 6-4, 6-4.

Elbaba advanced to the semifinals by defeating Margaryta Bilokin 6-4, 6-1 in the first round and with a 6-3, 7-6 win over the third-seeded Jacqueline Cako in the second round. Elbaba advanced to the National Playoffs by claiming the Eastern Sectional as the top-seed from the region.

The event is held in conjunction with the Connecticut Open presented by United Technologies, the final Emirates Airline US Open Series women’s event of the summer. The winners’ of the men’s and women’s singles championships earn a wild card berth into the US Open Qualifying Tournament, while the winners of the men’s, women’s and mixed doubles championships earn a wild card berth into the main draw of the US Open in their respective event.
