CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 16 Virginia field hockey team (4-4, 0-1 ACC) opens a two-game road trip by playing at No. 9 Boston College (4-3, 1-1 ACC) on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. at the Boston College Field Hockey Complex in Newton, Mass.

No. 9 Boston College will be the third-straight top-10 opponent for the Cavaliers after UVA downed then-No. 10 Princeton, 2-0, last Friday before falling 8-0 to then-No. 5 UConn on Sunday. The Eagles were ranked No. 18 last week before jumping into the top-10 after defeating then-No. 3 North Carolina, 2-1, last Friday.
The Cavaliers are ranked No. 16 in this week’s NFHCA Coaches’ Poll but are the No. 8 team in the first RPI rankings released by the NCAA this week. UVA has played the fourth-toughest schedule this season among all Division I teams.
Junior Tara Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and senior Caleigh Foust (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) provided all of the Cavaliers’ offense last week, scoring a goal apiece in both the Liberty and Princeton victories. Vittese is now tied for the team lead in goals (4) and points (8) with senior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.). Senior Lucy Hyams (Whitstable, England) leads the team with five assists.
The Cavaliers are outshooting their opponents this year 152-117, taking 4.375 more shots per game. Foust and Vittese are tied for second in the ACC, averaging 3.75 shots per game.
The Eagles’ Chelcie Mondonca is this week’s NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week and the co-ACC Defensive Player of the Week. The right back scored the game-winning goal against the Tar Heels and helped anchor a defense that allowed just two goals last week. Brittany Sheenan leads the offense with eight goals and two assists.
Virginia holds a 10-8 advantage in the all-time series, but BC has won the last two meetings. The Eagles prevailed, 5-4, in overtime in Charlottesville last season. UVA’s last victory was a 1-0 double-overtime contest in 2013.
Virginia finishes off the road trip by playing Fairfield on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 12 p.m. in Fairfield, Conn. The Cavaliers will be back home at Turf Field next weekend, hosting No. 14 Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m., and No. 17 Old Dominion on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all regular-season UVA home field hockey games.
