CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 2 Virginia (8-2-0, 1-1-0 ACC) women’s soccer team continues conference play on the road Sunday, facing No. 3 Florida State (8-1-0, 2-0-0 ACC) at 1 p.m. It’s the sixth consecutive meeting between the teams with both teams ranked in the top 5 nationally.

The Cavaliers are coming off only the second loss of the season after dropping a 2-1 contest at Miami on Thursday night. Freshman midfielder Zoe Morse (East Lansing, Mich.) scored the goal for the Cavaliers off an Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) assist. It was the second goal of the season for Morse.
Virginia’s conference opener was a 2-0 victory over No. 17 Virginia Tech.
Junior Veronica Latsko (Venetia, Pa.) leads the Virginia offense with six goals this season, while Shaffer bolsters the attack with four goals and four assists herself out of the midfield. In all, 12 different Cavaliers have scored goals on the season with eight players scoring multiple goals. Eleven different players have added assists with Shaffer’s four leading the way.
Defensively, the Cavaliers are anchored by a veteran unit led by seniors Meghan Cox (Springfield, Va.), Tina Iordanou (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) and Kristen McNabb (Montville, N.J.), and junior Megan Reid (Orinda, Calif.) along the back line. Senior goalkeeper Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) has combined with the back line to allow only five goals on the season on the way to the eight shutouts.
The Seminoles are coming into the contest undefeated in the early parts of ACC play and with a 3-0 victory over Wake Forest on Thursday night. The Seminoles also posted a 1-0 win over Miami to open the conference slate. All eight of the Seminoles’ wins have been shutouts, while the lone loss was a 1-0 shutout by South Alabama.
Deyna Castellanos leads the Florida State offense with five goals, while Kristen McFarland has added four goals and Megan Connolly has added three goals. The Seminoles have scored 17 goals on the season and allowed only the one.
