CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 7 Virginia (8-2-1, 1-1-1 ACC) women’s soccer team returns home to host No. 16 North Carolina (6-2-2, 1-1-1 ACC) at KlÃÆ’¶ckner Stadium on Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest broadcast by ESPNU.
Tickets are available and can be purchased online at VirginiaSports.com or at the gates on game day. Fans who can’t make it to the match can also follow the action through live stats linked at VirginiaSports.com in addition to the WatchESPN app and the television broadcast on ESPNU.
Prior to the match, fans have the opportunity to get an autograph from two-time MAC Hermann Trophy winner Morgan Brian. Brian will be signing autographs at the stadium from 12-1 p.m. prior to kickoff.
Virginia returns home after a two-game road trip in conference play last week. The Cavaliers are coming off a 1-1 draw at No. 3 Florida State as the two teams battled for 100 minutes before weather forced the match to be called in a tie.
The Cavaliers have scored 29 goals on the season and are paced by junior forward Veronica Latsko (Venetia, Pa.) with seven goals and three assists. She is joined by senior midfielder Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) with four goals and four assists. In all, 12 different players have scored goals this season with eight scoring multiple goals. Twelve different players have also tallied assists as Virginia spreads the ball around in the offense.
Defensively, the Cavaliers have allowed only six goals on the season behind a veteran defense that features seniors Meghan Cox (Springfield, Va.), Tina Iordanou (Upper Brookville, N.Y.), Kristen McNabb (Montville, N.J.) and junior Megan Reid (Orinda, Calif.) along the back line. Senior Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) anchors the defense in goal.
The squad has posted eight shutouts, all victories for the Cavaliers, and held opponents to five shots per game, including two contests where opponents didn’t get a shot off for the match.
North Carolina is playing its third-straight road contest and is also coming off a tie, having played No. 13 Clemson to a 1-1 draw. Annie Kingman and Bridgett Andrzejewski lead the Tar Heel offense with four goals each, while goalkeeper Lindsey Harris is the reigning ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
