CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s soccer team earned recognition for its achievement in the classroom this week when it was named as a recipient of the Team Academic Award by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The Cavaliers earned the recognition with a team GPA of 3.39.

“We have goals every year and the academic piece is very much a part of that,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Our goal is to have a team GPA of over a 3.0 and we’ve managed that the last four or five years. As hard as they work on the soccer field, they work equally hard – if not harder – in the classroom.

“This is a reward for all of that hard work. We’re very proud of them as people and not just players. This award is not something we take for granted. We have good, disciplined players who are not only motivated about soccer, but academics as well.”

To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player’s GPA, then dividing by the number of players.
