Virginia's Rally Falls Short at Wake Forest

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia volleyball team fell in a five-set battle at Wake Forest, 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 18-25, 15-12) on Friday night at the Summit School in Winston Salem, N.C.
Virginia (4-15, 1-6 ACC) trailed 2-0 in the match and was down in the third, but fought back with an 8-0 run to take the third set and continued its strong play with a 25-18 win in the fourth set to send the match to a tie-breaking fifth set. The Cavaliers took the early lead in the fifth, but several runs gave Wake Forest (8-11, 4-4 ACC) the lead and eventual 15-12 win.
“I am proud of our resolve to come back and fight after being down 2-0,” head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We should not have been in that situation as we had our chances to win in games one and two. Tonight showed we are close to where we need to be. There are just a couple of plays we have to make in a set to get wins.”
UVA out-hit Wake .287-.204 and led with 15.0 blocks to nine and seven service aces to six. The Deacs had an edge in kills, 65-54, and digs, 51-47.
Senior Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) led the Cavaliers with 17 kills and fellow senior Jasmine Burton (West Hills, Calif.) added 15. Freshman Jennifer Wineholt (San Diego, Calif.) dished out 38 assists to pace the offense and lead the team with six blocks and three aces.
“Jennifer (Wineholt) had her best match of the year and Jasmine and Haley both had a great night for us attacking as well as blocking,” Hohenshelt added.
Redshirt freshman Kat Young (Chantilly, Va.) added five blocks, while Kole, Burton and freshman Kiley Banker (West Lafayette, Ind.) contributed four blocks each. Freshman Kelsey Miller (Crestwood, Ky.) led with 12 digs and senior Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) had 10.
Virginia took a 6-3 lead to open the first set. The Cavaliers remained in front 10-7 after a kill by Young to force a Wake Forest timeout. The Deacs cut it to one, but back-to-back kills by Kole and redshirt junior Alex Thorson (Spring, Texas) stretched the lead back to three. Virginia took a 17-13 lead after a kill by Burton and solo block for Wineholt, but 5-1 run tied the set at 18-18. The teams saw two more ties before Wake closed the set on a 5-1 run to win 25-21.
UVA jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set and stretched its lead to 12-4 with a 6-2 run that included two-straight service aces by sophomore Coral Kazaroff (Apex, N.C.). Wake Forest mounted an 8-0 run to tie the set at 12-12. The Cavaliers responded with a 4-1 run to regain the lead 16-13 to force a Deacs timeout. UVA was leading 20-17 when Wake Forest closed the set on an 8-2 run to win 25-22.
Wake Forest opened the third set with a 7-3 advantage. The Cavaliers cut the lead to two several times, but the Deacs used a 5-1 run to lead 13-7. Down 15-10, UVA used an 8-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. Virginia remained in control to win the third set 25-20 and send the match to a fourth set.
The momentum carried over to the fourth set as UVA opened with a 6-0 lead. The Cavaliers continued to extend their lead, taking a 14-7 advantage as Wake called timeout. Virginia led by as many as eight points and was up 19-11 when a 5-1 run for the Deacs cut the Cavaliers’ advantage to 20-16. Burton landed three kills and a block by Young and Wineholt helped secure the 25-18 win to send it to a fifth set.
UVA took a 3-0 lead as Wake called an early timeout. The Cavaliers went up 5-1 before a 4-0 run for Wake Forest tied the set at 5-5. The teams traded points and the lead several times. With the set tied 9-9, Wake Forest scored four-straight to take a 13-9 lead and held on for the 15-12 win.
Virginia will continue play on the road as it travels to Durham, N.C. to face Duke tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
