CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – It’s senior day for the Cavaliers on Sunday and No. 8 Virginia (11-3-2, 4-2-2 ACC) will honor six seniors prior to facing Boston College (10-6-1, 2-6-0 ACC) in a 1 p.m. match at KlÃÆ’¶ckner Stadium.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the senior day festivities with ceremonies held prior to kick against the Eagles. Fans who can’t make it to the match can follow through GameTracker or the live broadcast on the ACC Network Extra linked at VirginiaSports.com. Tickets still remain and can be purchased online or at the gate.
Virginia is coming off a 3-1 victory over NC State on Thursday night, while Boston College is coming off a 2-1 loss at Clemson.
Senior midfielder Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) leads the Cavalier offense with nine goals and five assists on the season. In all, the Cavaliers have 12 different goal scorers this season and 13 different players with assists. Virginia has scored 40 goals on the year, averaging almost three goals per match, while allowing only eight goals through 15 matches.
In the outing against NC State, freshman Taylor Ziemer (Santa Rosa, Calif.) notched a pair of goals to bring her season total to seven, giving the Cavaliers three players with at least seven goals. Junior forward Veronica Latsko (Venetia, Pa.) also has seven goals for Virginia.
That defensive production has come from a veteran back line that features seniors Meghan Cox (Springfield, Va.), Tina Iordanou (Upper Brookville, N.Y.), Kristen McNabb (Montville, N.J.) and junior Megan Reid (Orinda, Calif.). Senior Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) anchors the defense in goal.
The squad has posted 10 shutouts, all victories for the Cavaliers.
McKenzie Meehan leads the Eagle offense with 11 goals this season, while Hayley Dowd has added seven. Boston College has scored 37 goals on the season. Lauren Berman and Gaby Carreiro are the top distributors with seven and six assists, respectively.
Defensively, the Eagles have conceded only 19 goals on the year and posted six shutouts. Alexis Bryant holds the bulk of the decisions, posting an 8-5-1 record in goal for 2016.
