CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia field hockey team (11-6, 3-3 ACC) plays at No. 5 Maryland (13-3) on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. at Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in College Park, Md.

The Cavaliers are coming off a 3-2 loss in overtime on Friday to Louisville. Senior Riley Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored her ninth goal of the season, while sophomore Izzy McDonough (Kennett Square, Pa.) netted her first.
Virginia finished conference play tied for third place in the ACC alongside North Carolina, Louisville and Boston College with a 3-3 record. By virtue of tiebreakers, the Cavaliers will be the No. 6 seed in the ACC Tournament, facing third-seeded Boston College in the first round. The ACC Championships are set to begin Thursday, Nov. 3, at Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Maryland is coming off its biggest win of the season on Sunday, handing top-ranked UConn its first loss in a 2-1 game in College Park. The Terrapins held the nation’s top scoring team to well under its average of 5.41 goals per game and the nation’s top goal scorer, UConn’s Charlotte Veitner, scoreless.
Tuesday’s game will be the first meeting between the two teams since the final regular-season game in 2013 when the Terrapins defeated the Cavaliers 4-1 in College Park. This will be the first meeting of the two teams as non-conference opponents since 1982. Maryland holds a 39-20-2 advantage in the all-time series. UVA’s last win over the Terps came in 2012 in Charlottesville. Virginia’s last victory over Maryland in College Park came in a shootout in 2001.
The Cavaliers will wrap-up the regular-season schedule on Sunday, Oct. 30 when they host No. 17 James Madison at 1 p.m. The game will also feature the annual Senior Day recognition ceremony, when all nine of UVA’s fourth and fifth years will be honored in an on-field ceremony shortly after the conclusion of the game.
