CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.Jake McCarthy (So., Scranton, Pa.) hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the Orange team to a 5-3 win Sunday to clinch the 2016 Orange & Blue World Series championship. The Orange team was led by student assistant coach Steven Proscia.

McCarthy went 2-for-5 with three RBI to highlight the Orange’s eight-hit day. Pavin Smith (Jr., Jupiter, Fla.), Charlie Cody (Jr., Chesapeake, Va.) and Andy Weber (So., Aurora, Ohio) each had two hits for the Blue team, which also finished with eight hits.

Chesdin Harrington (So., Montpelier, Va.) worked 2 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win for the Orange, while Tyler Shambora (Sr., Venice, Fla.) allowed a pair of runs in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss. Tommy Doyle (Jr., Vienna, Va.) fired 1 1/3 scoreless innings to claim the save. Both starters performed well ââ’¬” the Orange’s Daniel Lynch (So., Henrico, Va.), who worked five shutout innings, and the Blue’s Teddy Paisley, who fired 4 2/3 innings and gave up two unearned runs.

The Orange jumped to a 2-0 edge through four innings with unearned runs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Jack Weiller (So., Waccabuc, N.Y.) hit a leadoff single and then moved around to third with one out on an errant pickoff attempt. Cayman Richardson (Fr., Mechanicsville, Va.) grounded out to second to bring in the run.

In the fourth, Ernie Clement (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) reached on a leadoff error and moved to second on a balk. He scored on a Robbie Coman (Gr., Lake Worth, Fla.) single.

The Blue knotted the game in the sixth inning on a Cody sac fly and a Justin Novak (Jr., Tokyo, Japan) RBI groundout, but the Orange came right back in the top of the seventh when McCarthy launched a one-out, three-run homer to right field.

The Blue climbed to within two, 5-3, in the eighth inning on an RBI triple from Weber, but Doyle entered with two out to strand a pair. The Blue threatened again by putting to runners on with two out in the ninth, but Doyle again buckled down and got Novak to fly out to end the game.
