Virginia Falls 3-1 to Syracuse

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team fell 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 25-16) to Syracuse on Friday night in Memorial Gymnasium.
“It is the bug that has bit us all year,” head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “We have been practicing these situations and we will just try to be better at it. Jasmine (Burton) had a fabulous night tonight with a double-double. She carried us and did some unbelievable things and that is how she has been the last three weeks. I hope she continues to play this way for these next three weeks.”
Virginia (5-20, 2-11 ACC) led the match in kills, 53-52, and digs, 67-61. Syracuse (7-17, 6-8 ACC) had the edge in hitting percentage, .227-.170, and blocks, 12.0-6.0. Both teams finished with eight aces each.
Senior Jasmine Burton (West Hills, Calif.) led the match with a season-high 19 kills on a .302 hitting percentage and had 14 digs for her first double-double of the season. Burton also tallied four service aces and two blocks.
Senior Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 14 kills and had two blocks, while redshirt freshman Kat Young (Chantilly, Va.) recorded eight kills and a team-high three blocks. Freshman Jennifer Wineholt (San Diego, Calif.) dished out 46 assists and senior Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) led the team with 24 digs.
Virginia had the early lead after two kills by Kole to start the night, but Syracuse scored four-straight to go ahead 5-2. The Cavaliers stayed close and eventually tied the set at nine, but the Orange used another run to go ahead 12-9. UVA trailed 20-17 when it used a 4-1 run to tie the set at 21, but Syracuse hit right back and took a 24-22 advantage. Virginia fought off two set points with a block by Burton and Young followed by a kill for sophomore Harley Sebastian (Atlanta, Ga.) to tie it again at 24. Syracuse held on with two-straight points to win the first set 26-24.
In the second set, the Cavaliers called timeout early trailing 7-2. Syracuse continued to pace the set and went ahead 17-11 before UVA mounted a 4-0 run. Later in the set, Virginia scored four consecutive points capped off back-to-back aces by Burton to tie the set at 20. The teams saw three more ties before Syracuse pulled away to take the set 25-23.
UVA and Syracuse traded points to begin the third set before the Cavaliers took a 7-5 lead. The set was then tied again five more times until the Orange took a 12-10 advantage. UVA countered with a 5-1 run to lead 15-13 and stretched it to an 18-14 lead to force a Syracuse timeout. The Cavaliers led 20-16 as Syracuse struck back with a 4-0 run to tie the set once again. It was close down the stretch, but Virginia took the win 25-23 on a kill by Burton.
The Cavaliers were down 7-3 in the fourth set, but closed the gap to two on kills by Kole and freshman Chino Anukwuem (East Hanover, N.J.). Syracuse was leading by three when kills by Burton and Sebastian made it a one-point set, 9-8, but the Orange responded with five-straight points to lead 15-8. Syracuse remained in control and took the set 25-16 to secure the win.
Virginia returns to Memorial Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon to host Boston College at 1 p.m.
