Virginia Drops Dual Meet At No. 11 Michigan Friday

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Virginia (0-1) started strong, but the Wolverines closed stronger down the stretch as the Cavaliers fell 24-9 at No. 11 Michigan on Friday night in a dual match at Cliff Keen Arena.
Freshman Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas) at 125 pounds, 10th-ranked senior George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio) at 141 pounds and senior Chuck Boddy (Abington, Pa.) at heavyweight recorded the wins for the Cavaliers on the night.
“The dual couldn’t have been more different from the first to the second half,” said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “The first half our guys came out like warriors. Jack Mueller specifically beat Austin Assad right out of the gates in his first meet ever for us, while George DiCamillo just did what he does. Andrew Atkinson had a battle with the number five guy in the country, while Sam Krivus was a point away from winning against a great kid.
“The second half, though, we had a lot of letdowns and we need to do a lot of work on the back end of our team. We have to make sure we wrestle hard the whole way through. We are growing as a team every day, and I know we are going to be so much better come March. This is all part of it. I believe in our big guys. I believe in their hearts. This is all growth, especially for our young guys. It was a great event and a great place to wrestler a classic team. I’m thankful to be able to compete like this for our guys.”
Mueller got a big win to start things off for Virginia at 125 pounds, picking up a 7-4 decision over 20th-ranked Austin Assad. The win put Virginia on the scoreboard as the freshman picked up the win in his first-ever dual meet as a Cavalier.
The Wolverines moved in front with a bonus-point victory at 133 pounds before DiCamillo would pick up the win at 141 pounds. The decision by the senior slipped Virginia back in front of Michigan in the overall score.
Sam Krivus (Greensburg, Pa.) battled at 149 pounds before dropping a tight 4-2 decision, while No. 20 Andrew Atkinson (Lynchburg, Va.) came up just short in his bout at 157 pounds against fifth-ranked Brian Murphy. Michigan’s seventh-ranked Logan Massa pushed the lead out to seven points with a decision over Ray Bethea (Trenton, N.J.) at 165 pounds.
A pair of major decisions for the Wolverines at 174 pounds and 184 pounds, followed by a decision at 197 pounds, helped Michigan build an insurmountable lead before Boddy would close things out with a win for the Cavaliers at heavyweight. Boddy battled and picked up the win with a 3-1 sudden-victory decision to cap the scoring for Virginia on the night.
The Cavaliers will continue to wrestle on the road, returning to action Sunday (Nov. 13) at No. 18 Central Michigan at 1 p.m.
