Virginia Closes Road Slate at No. 6 North Carolina, NC State

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia volleyball team (7-21, 4-12 ACC) closes its play on the road at No. 6 North Carolina Friday (Nov. 18) at 6 p.m. at Carmichael Arena and NC State Sunday (Nov. 20) at 2 p.m. at Reynolds Coliseum.
Both matches will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra on WatchESPN. Links for the stream and live stats will be available on VirginiaSports.com.
Virginia won back-to-back ACC matches for the first time this season after sweeping Louisville and earning a comeback win over Notre Dame, 3-2. Seniors Jasmine Burton (West Hills, Calif.) and Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) each finished with 35 kills over the two matches. Freshman Jennifer Wineholt (San Diego, Calif.) averaged 10.88 assists per set and senior Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) averaged 5.25 digs per set.
UVA is 3-2 in its last five matches, averaging 13.0 kills per set on a .262 hitting percentage. The Cavaliers are also averaging 1.57 aces and 2.24 blocks per set in those matches. All three wins have come on the road.
Burton has been outstanding in those five matches for the Cavaliers. Burton is averaging 4.33 kills per set on a .359 hitting percentage in that span. She has also led the team with 10 aces, is second with 20 blocks and has added 37 digs.
North Carolina has moved up steadily in the AVCA poll with five-straight wins entering Friday’s match. The Tar Heels lead the league in hitting percentage (.270), opponent hitting percentage (.163) and blocks (2.95). Taylor Leath leads the team with 309 kills, while Sydnye Fields is second in the ACC with 1.39 blocks per set and Sheila Doyle is fourth with 4.50 digs per set.
Virginia is looking to snap a 14-match losing streak to North Carolina. The last win for UVA came on Oct. 10, 2008, when the Cavaliers won 3-2 in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels lead the all-time series, 46-14.
NC State is coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 6 North Carolina on Wednesday. The Wolf Pack ranks fifth in the ACC in kills (13.32 per set) and fourth in digs (15.52 per set). Julia Brown leads the team and is third in the conference with 4.02 kills per set. Rachel Eppley leads the back line with 4.15 digs per set, while two players are averaging 1.00 blocks per set.
The Cavaliers have won the last three matches against NC State. UVA won last season’s meeting, 3-0, which was also held on Nov. 20. Virginia leads the all-time series 39-25.
Virginia will conclude the regular season at home next weekend. The Cavaliers host Virginia Tech on Friday, Nov. 25 in a Commonwealth Clash match and Pitt on Saturday, Nov. 26.
