CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (6-2, 0-0 ACC) takes on UIC (2-6, 0-0) on Friday, December 16 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
All of the 2016-17 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA with Channing Poole calling the action. The game will also stream live online as an ACC Network Extra contest.
Virginia will be playing its first game since its 67-47 victory at Bowling Green on Dec. 4 and will be playing on its home court for the first time since a 62-54 victory over Rutgers on Nov. 20.
Senior Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) had her best-shooting game of the season at BGSU, going 7-of-9 from the field for 16 points. In the last two games, Mason is 5-of-5 from three-point range.
Junior forward Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J.) has led UVA in scoring in each of the last three games and led the team in rebounding in the last two. She leads the team in both categories, averaging 13.6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. Moses is sixth in the ACC in field goal shooting percentage, making 54.3 percent of her attempts.
Freshman center Felicia Aiyeotan (Lagos, Nigeria) scored nine points in 13 minutes at Bowling Green. Aiyeotan, who has blocked at least one shot in every game this season, is second in the ACC in total blocks (22) and blocked shots per game (2.75).
Virginia has held a lead at halftime in all eight games this season and has also committed fewer turnovers than their opponent in every game.
This is the first-ever meeting between the Cavaliers and Illinois-Chicago, but UVA is 6-1 all-time against the current members of the Horizon League, having faced Green Bay last season, picking up a 68-59 victory over the Phoenix in the Paradise Jam Tournament in the US Virgin Islands. UVA and Green Bay also faced one another in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament with Green Bay advancing with a 69-67 victory. The Cavaliers have also faced Cleveland State (4-0, last meeting in 2006) and Wright State (1-0, last meeting in 2005)
UIC is 0-3 on the road this season and has lost its last five games including an 88-44 loss at Northwestern in an 11 a.m. field trip day game on Tuesday. The Flames are being outscored by an average of 22.0 points per game during this five-game skid. The Flames’ last win was a 106-58 home victory over Robert Morris on Nov. 17.
Taylor Toney leads the Flames, averaging 10.8 points per game and 5.6 rebounds. Melita Emanuel-Carr is averaging 10.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Friday’s game will include a celebration of National Ugly Holiday Sweater Day. Fans are encouraged to wear their holiday sweaters to Friday night’s game. The first 250 students through the doors will receive a t-shirt with a holiday-themed Virginia basketball design.
Single-game ticket prices for all home games are $10 for Reserved seating, $8 for adult General Admission and $6 for youth (18 & under), senior (60 & over) and UVA faculty/staff General Admission.
