CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 23 Virginia (0-0) women’s tennis team opens the 2017 season on Saturday (Jan. 21) hosting Boston College (0-0) at 11 a.m. at the Boar’s Head Sport Club.
Admission to all women’s tennis matches is free to the public. Fans who can’t make it to the match can follow the results through live stats linked at VirginiaSports.com and through the team’s official Twitter account by following @UVAWomensTennis.
Virginia enters the weekend ranked No. 23 in the latest Oracle/ITA Team rankings and has a pair of players ranked nationally in singles. Freshman Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) is ranked No. 79 in singles, while sophomore Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) is ranked No. 124 in singles.
The Cavaliers return three letterwinners from last year’s squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. Sophomores Kelley and Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.), and junior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) all return to the squad for the 2017 season.
Virginia also welcomed five newcomers to the squad this season, comprising the sixth-ranked recruiting class in the nation according to TennisRecruiting.net. Included in the crop of newcomers is Johanson, freshmen Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas), Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.) and Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.), along with junior transfer Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia) who competed her first two seasons at George Washington.
Virginia is 19-0 all-time against Boston College and is playing the Eagles in the season-opener and conference-opener for the second consecutive season. The Cavaliers won last season’s meeting 4-3 at Boston College.
