CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team (1-2, 1-0 ACC) fell to Wake Forest (4-2) by a score of 4-0 on Sunday (Jan. 29) in a non-conference matchup between the two teams in the consolation finals of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Demon Deacons claimed the doubles point and picked up singles wins on courts one, five and six to secure the victory over the Cavaliers.

Wake Forest took the doubles point after the teams split on courts one and three. The Cavalier pairing of Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and junior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) won 6-2 on court one, while Wake Forest took a 6-4 decision over the Virginia freshman duo of Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas) and Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.) on court three.

With the doubles point on the line, it went to a tiebreak on court two. The Demon Deacons slipped past the Cavaliers to secure the doubles point with a 7-6 (5) win over the duo of freshman Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and sophomore Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine).

The match then moved to singles where Wake Forest picked up the three singles wins to lock up the match.

Samantha Asch defeated Favero 6-0, 6-1 to take the match lead out to two points. Carter then defeated Virginia’s Bleser 6-2, 6-3 to push the lead to three points before No. 33 Guerin of Wake Forest defeated Mercer by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to close the match.

Virginia will continue to play at home next weekend, hosting Syracuse in an ACC contest on Saturday (Feb. 4) and No. 16 South Carolina on Sunday (Feb. 5). Both matches will be played at the Boar’s Head Sports Club and admission is free to the public.
