Virginia Hosts Syracuse, No. 21 South Carolina In Weekend Matches

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ÃÆ’¢Ãƒ¢’¬” The Virginia women’s tennis team (1-2, 1-0 ACC) continues competition at home this weekend, hosting Syracuse and No. 21 South Carolina in a pair of matches at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The Cavaliers will face Syracuse (1-3, 0-0 ACC) at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday before facing South Carolina (4-1) at 12 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to all matches is free. Fans who can’t make it to the match can follow through live stats and a video stream linked at VirginiaSports.com.
The matches against the Orange and Gamecocks continue a five-match home streak to open the season for Virginia.
The Cavaliers look to pick up the second win of the season in ACC play against Syracuse on Saturday. Virginia opened the 2017 season with a win over Boston College at home, defeating the Eagles 4-3 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club when freshman Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas) clinched the match on court six in singles.
Virginia currently has two players ranked in the Oracle/ITA Women’s Singles Rankings with freshman Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) coming in at No. 79 and sophomore Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) coming in at No. 124.
Syracuse has two players ranked in singles with Valeria Salazar Garcia coming in at No. 38 and Gabriela Knutson coming in at No. 99 overall. The pairing of Garcia and Knutson is also ranked No. 10 nationally in doubles.
The Orange opened the season with a win over Yale, but have dropped three consecutive matches heading into the weekend. Syracuse lost at Columbia, before falling to Mississippi State and Denver at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Michigan last weekend.
South Carolina enters the weekend with six players ranked in singles, including Ingrid Gamarra Martins at No. 16 , Mia Horvit at No. 62, Paige Cline at No. 72, Silvia Chinellato at No. 100, Brigit Folland at No. 122 and Caroline Dailey at No. 125. In doubles, the duo of Cline and Hadley Berg are ranked No. 39 nationally.
The Gamecocks have wins on the road over Furman, North Florida, Florida A&M and UC Santa Barbara. The only loss came on the road against Arizona State in a neutral-site matchup last weekend in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
