BOSTON-Virginia senior Cleo Boyd set a new school record in the 3,000 meters as the UVA women’s track and field team finished action Saturday (Feb. 4) at the Scarlett & White Meet in Boston.
In the team standings, the Cavaliers scored 97 points to place second. Mississippi State won the meet with 111.
“This weekend was very productive,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “It was a perfect simulation for what will take place in Notre Dame for ACCs. Several student-athletes had substantial breakthroughs and a few more are on the verge of doing something big.”
Boyd (Kingston, Ontario) finished third in the 3,000 meters in a school-record time of 9:18.20, less than a second ahead of the previous record, 9:18.80, set in 1992.
“This is an encouraging start to the track season for Cleo,” UVA women’s distance coach Todd Morgan said. “She competed well and is stacking some great weeks of training in.”
Senior Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) won the shot put with a throw of 15.43m (50′ 7.5″). In the pole vault, junior Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) won with a height of 3.65m (12′ 11.75″), while freshman Tedi DeMaria (Fuera Bush, N.Y.) was third, clearing a height of 3.50m (11′ 6″).
Freshman Emma Call (Richmond, Va.) placed second in the 800 meters in 2:10.22, which is fourth on UVA’s freshman list, while senior Micah Brickhill (Buckingham, Va.) is sixth in 2:11.27.
The Cavaliers had three qualify for the finals of the 60m hurdles with sophomore Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.), senior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) and freshman Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) placing third (8.55), fourth (8.75) and fifth (8.76), respectively.
In the 400 meters, senior Chimere Ezumah (Gardena, Calif.) finished fifth in 56.58.
The women’s 4x400m relay of Smith, senior Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.), freshman Anna Jefferson (Warren, Mich.) and Ezumah placed fourth in 3:44.52.
