BOSTON-The No. 5 Virginia men’s track and field team captured the team title Saturday (Feb. 4) at the Scarlett & White Meet at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center in Boston.

The Cavaliers scored 125.5 points to win the team title, ahead of George Mason (88.5), Boston University (77) and UConn (76).

“We still have a lot of work to do over the next few weeks but should gain major confidence after this weekend,” UVA director of track and field/cross country Bryan Fetzer said. “I’m very proud of how the men responded in Boston. The focus is there and we’re on the right path for the mission.”

Senior Zach Herriott (Kansas City, Mo.) set a school record in the 5,000 meters in 13:45.37, which ranks fourth in the NCAA this year. Redshirt sophomore Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.), junior Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomore Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.) placed 2-3-4. Weaverling (13:54.39) and Demarest (13:56.03) now rank third and fourth on UVA’s all-time list in the event.

“I am so excited for Zach,” UVA men’s distance coach Pete Watson said. “He has been a leader on this team since he stepped on Grounds. His run tonight was one of the most impressive races I have watched since I started coaching. I am so proud of him and that school record is well deserved.”

Freshman Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) won the triple jump with a leap of 16.36m (53′ 8.25″), which is a UVA freshman record, second-best in school history overall and fourth in the NCAA this year. Junior Aaron Worrell (Fort Eustis, Va.) was third with a mark of 15.44m (50′ 8″).

“Jordan was really looking forward to competing in Boston this weekend,” UVA jumps coach Mario Wilson said. “He was extremely focused leading up to the start of the competition. He executed a good jump, but definitely has more distance in his legs. Next up for him will be the ACC Championships.”

The Cavaliers swept the throwing events, as senior Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) won the weight throw with a mark of 21.23m (69′ 8″) and junior Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) claiming the shot put with a throw of 18.41m (60′ 5″). Sophomores Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) and Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) placed second in the weight throw and shot put, respectively.

In the mile, senior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) finished second in 4:00.80, while in the pole vault, redshirt freshman Sam Young (Lewes, Del.) was second, clearing a height of 4.90m (16′ 1″).

Sophomore Emmanuel Jackson (Raleigh, N.C.) placed third in the 60m hurdles in a PR of 8.21.

Next up, the Cavaliers will travel to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Elite Invitational Feb. 10-11. In addition, senior Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) will race in the prestigious Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games in New York on Feb. 11.
