Tallahassee, Fla. – Junior Maho Hayakawa (Lake Mary, Fla.) shot a career best 3-under 69 to lead No. 44 Virginia during the first day of play at the Florida State Match-Up Tournament. The Cavaliers finished the opening round in ninth place in their first outing of the spring. The 12-team field is competing at the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course in Tallahassee, Fla.

Virginia shot 10-over 298, a seven-shot improvement over the Hoos’ first round score from last season at the same event. South Carolina leads the field after shooting 10-under 278.

Hayakawa had seven birdies during her round, including four consecutive starting at the third hole. She is in tied for third place, three shots behind Texas A&M’s Maddie Szeryk.

UVA senior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) is in 29th place after opening the tournament with a 74. Sophomore Katharine Patrick (Houston, Texas) posted a score of 77 and is in 45h place while freshman Julia Ford (Shrewsbury, Mass.) is one shot behind her in 49th place. Sophomore Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) rounded out UVA’s scoring with an 80 to finish the first 18 holes in 58th place.

Ju Hee Bae (Chantilly, Va.), who is competing as an individual, is in 62nd place at 81. The event marks the first tournament in Bae’s career.

In addition to traditional collegiate scoring, the tournament features a unique team scoring component. The participating teams are paired in twosomes during the first two rounds and play in threesomes in the final round. The twosomes consist of partners playing together. The match-up portion of the tournament is determined by taking the best four scores from each of the partners and the lowest scores to make up the match-up partner total.

At the end of the tournament, the partners with the lowest score will win the Match-Up championship. The team and individual champions will also be crowned.

UVA and South Carolina are in second place in the match-up competition at 356. Florida State and Texas A&M lead the match-up at 351.

The event runs through Sunday.
