Boyd Wins Silver at ACC Indoor Championships

Notre Dame, Ind. – Virginia senior Cleo Boyd (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) ran the second fastest 5,000-meter time in Virginia history to win the silver medal at the 2017 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Notre Dame to highlight UVA’s second day performances.

Boyd crossed the finish line at the Loftus Sports Center with a time of 16:04.76. She finished 12th at last year’s competition before going on to win the ACC outdoor titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

“Cleo is such a tough competitor and she showed that tonight,” said assistant coach Todd Morgan. “As a tremendous student and athlete she is such a great ambassador for the University. I could not be prouder of her than I am right now.”

UVA’s freshman had some impressive results during the competition.

Freshman Emma Call (Richmond, Va.) placed eighth in the 800 meters with a clocking of 2:07.39. That set the UVA freshman record and ranks as the second best time in program history.

Freshman Tedi DeMaria (Feura Bush, N.Y.) was 11th in the pole vault with a personal best of 3.96 meters, which stands as the third best performance by a Cavalier in the event.

In the 60-meter hurdles, first year Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) set a personal best and freshman mark with her time of 8.56, toppling her pervious best of 8.59.

In that same race, sophomore Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) broke the school record with a time of 8.38 to finish ninth.

Sophomore Carly Feyerabend (Mechanicsville, Va.) tied for sixth in the high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters.

“Our young ones had some great performances that could easily be over looked in the final team standings,” said Virginia coach Bryan Fetzer. “For our hurdlers, a school record and a freshman record to finish the indoor season, that shows how much they’ve progressed. Both are very excited for outdoors already. Each has only just begun to see how good they can become.”

Virginia finished Friday in ninth place with 10 total points.

ACC Network Extra will live stream the final day of action, with former Olympic decathlon gold medalist Dan O’Brien serving as color analyst. He will be joined by veteran ESPN play-by-play announcer Shawn Kenney. Coverage will air from noon until the meet’s conclusion (approximately 4 p.m.).

The meet also signifies the men’s and women’s track and field matchups between Virginia and Virginia Tech in the Commonwealth Clash, sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of University of Virginia Athletics. There are two points at stake in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the point rivalry series between UVA and Virginia Tech. The school that finishes higher in the meet on the men’s side will receive a point in the competition, as will the school that finishes higher on the women’s side.
