No. 11 UVA Hosts High Point Wednesday for a Mid-Week Tilt

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday night as the Cavaliers (3-1) host the High Point Panthers (2-2) in a mid-week tussle at KlÃÆ’¶ckner Stadium. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. UVA is ranked No. 11 in this week’s USILA coaches poll and No. 9 in the Inside Lacrosse/Maverick media poll.

Virginia and High Point are meeting for the second time in men’s lacrosse, a series the Panthers hold a 1-0 advantage in after escaping KlÃÆ’¶ckner Stadium last year with a 12-11 overtime win. UVA holds a 29-2 all-time advantage over current teams from the Southern Conference, including a 23-0 all-time record against in-state foe VMI. The Southern Conference is in its third season as a men’s lacrosse league and besides Air Force (1967), Bellarmine (2005) and VMI (1983), the remaining five members started their lacrosse programs in the last seven years. Also, part of the SoCon are Jacksonville (2010), Mercer (2011), High Point (2012), Furman (2014) and Richmond (2014).

Reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Week Zed Williams leads UVA with 10 assists and 20 points. Sharing the team lead in ground balls with 20, Williams is the only player in the nation with at least 20 points and 20 ground balls. Dox Aitken leads UVA with 11 goals, while Mike D’Amario rounds out the top scorers with 10 goals and 13 points. Goalie Will Railey leads the ACC with 9.5 saves per game and is posting a 12.86 goals against average between the pipes. He is also saving 46.3 percent of shots against him.

Jon Torpey is in his fifth season as the Panthers’ head coach, their only one in program history. The Panthers’ first season of playing lacrosse was the 2013 season. Torpey welcomes back 23 letterwinners from last year’s 9-6 team. High Point won the SoCon in 2015 and made its first NCAA Tournament appearance that season. Michael LeClair leads High Point with six goals, five assists and 11 points. Jason Ashwood has three goals and four assists and Chris Young rounds out the top scorers with five goals. Goalie Tim Troutner is saving 57.1 percent of shots and posting a 9.28 goals against average in the cage.

Virginia’s next game is its ACC opener at No. 12 Syracuse on Sunday. Faceoff is set for noon at the Carrier Dome. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
