Virginia Hosts Virginia Tech Sunday To Continue ACC Play

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s tennis team (4-3, 2-0 ACC) returns to action at home on Sunday (March 5), continuing Atlantic Coast Conference play against No. 48 Virginia Tech (7-3, 0-1 ACC) at noon.
Originally scheduled to be played at the Snyder Tennis Center, the match will now be played indoors at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Live results and video are available online at VirginiaSports.com
Fans can participate in several promotions surrounding the match, including the Sunday Sundae bar with free ice cream. Fans can also interact with face painters and balloon artists. It will also be ITA Kids Day with an opportunity to hit with players on the courts following the match.
The Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529 is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams at University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 22 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11.5 points or more will be crowned the winner and take home the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash trophy. The Cavaliers return to the court after picking up a pair of wins over Penn and Old Dominion on Feb. 18 in a doubleheader at Old Dominion. It’s the third ACC contest of the season for Virginia who has previously defeated both Boston College and Syracuse at home this season. The Cavaliers defeated Boston College 4-3 and picked up a 6-1 win over Syracuse.
A pair of wrestlers are ranked in singles play for the Cavaliers with junior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) coming in at No. 48 in the Oracle/ITA women’s singles rankings, while freshman Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) is ranked No. 66. Virginia also has the No. 40 doubles team in Mercer and freshman Chloe Gullickson (New Braunfels, Texas).
Virginia Tech enters the match after dropping its ACC opener on the road at No. 5 Georgia Tech on Friday afternoon. The Hokies fell to the Yellow Jackets by a score of 6-1 with the court three singles match going the way of Tech’s Natalie Novotna.
The Hokies have one player in the Oracle/ITA rankings with Caroline Daxhelet coming in at No. 92 in singles.
The Cavaliers and Hokies have one common opponent to date this season with both squads picking up wins over Old Dominion. The Hokies defeated the Monarchs 5-2 on Feb. 25, while Virginia defeated Old Dominion with a 5-0 just a week earlier.
