No. 13 UVA Hosts No. 3 Notre Dame on Saturday in ACC Action

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s lacrosse team returns home on Saturday as the Cavaliers (5-2) return to ACC play when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (3-1) come to KlÃÆ’¶ckner Stadium. Faceoff is set for 6 p.m. UVA is ranked No. 13 in this week’s USILA coaches poll and No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse/Maverick media poll. The Fighting Irish are No. 3 in the coaches poll and ranked No. 2 in the media poll.

Saturday marks the 11th all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and Fighting Irish, and the fourth in ACC play after Notre Dame officially joined the conference July 1, 2013. The all-time series is tied,5-5, but the Cavaliers have dropped the last four meetings. The first six games in the series were played in Charlottesville before the 2012 meeting in Chester, Pa., followed by UVA’s first-ever trip to Notre Dame in 2014. Four of the meetings, including the 2012 contest in Chester, Pa., have been in the NCAA Tournament.

Reigning ACC and USILA National Offensive Player of the Week Zed Williams leads UVA with 18 assists and 34 points, while also picking up 30 ground balls. Mike D’Amario leads UVA with 20 goals, while Michael Kraus is second on the team with 32 points, courtesy of 16 goals and 16 assists. Dox Aitken rounds out the top scorers with 19 goals and six assists. Goalie Will Railey is saving 44 percent of shots between the pipes and posting a 12.91 goals against average.

Notre Dame head coach Kevin Corrigan, a UVA alum, is in his 29th season with the Fighting Irish after spending two seasons as an assistant coach for the Cavaliers under former head coaching legend Jim Adams. Corrigan has led Notre Dame to 21 NCAA Tournaments while in South Bend and four Championship Weekends. Ryder Garnsey leads Notre Dame with 11 goals, nine assists and 20 points. Mikey Wynne is second on the team with 10 goals and 13 points. Brendan Gleason and Bryan Costabile round out the top Irish goal scorers with five scores each. Shane Doss is saving 53.1 percent of shots he is seeing in the goal, while posting a 7.71 goals against average.

Virginia is back in action on Saturday, March 25 when the Cavaliers travel to No. 14 Johns Hopkins in a clash for the Doyle Smith Cup. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
