AUSTIN, Texas – On UVA’s opening day at the 90th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, the No. 6 UVA men’s track and field team saw sophomore Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) finish in the top five of the hammer throw.

Jonsson placed fourth overall with a mark of 70.30 meters. He secured his finish with his best throw coming in the fourth-round of the competition.

“Hilmar had a fantastic performance today,” said assistant throws coach Martin Maric. “Considering the stage of training that we are in right now, he was able to surpass the expectations. Opening of the season couldn’t be better.”

Jonsson’s throw ranks him second nationally and in the East Region, according to the rankings published before the weekend competitions.

The Texas Relays continue tomorrow with UVA competing in the women’s shot put, women’s long jump, women’s javelin and the men’s and women’s triple jump.
