No. 14 UVA Hosts No. 20 UNC Sunday in an ACC Duel

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers (7-4, 0-2 ACC) return to ACC play on Sunday when the North Carolina Tar Heels (5-5, 0-1 ACC) come to KlÃÆ’¶ckner Stadium. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. UVA is ranked No. 14 in this week’s USILA coaches poll and No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse/Maverick media poll. UNC is ranked No. 20 in the coaches poll and No. 19 in the media poll.

There will be Senior Day festivities on Sunday, as 13 Cavaliers will be honored pregame.

Live stats will be available at VirginiaSports.com. There will be a live radio broadcast in the Charlottesville area on WINA 1070 AM and 98.9 FM, and it will be a simulcast as an audio webcast on VirginiaSports.com . John Freeman will bring the play-by-play and Doug Tarring will provide the analysis. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Anish Shroff will call the play-by-play and Quint Kessenich will provide analysis.

Sunday marks the 81st all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and the Tar Heels, a series the Cavaliers own a 50-30 advantage in since 1938. Virginia has faced UNC every year since 1964. After winning 19-of-21 meetings dating back to 1997, UVA dropped four straight against UNC until beating them 13-11 at the ACC Showcase Game in April 2014. UNC’s four-game winning streak was the longest in the series for the Tar Heels since winning four straight during the 1990-92 seasons. UVA’s 50 wins over the Tar Heels are the most the Cavaliers have over any opponent in program history.

Michael Kraus and Mike D’Amario share the UVA team lead with 28 goals, while Kraus has a team-best 48 points. Zed Williams leads UVA with 22 assists and is second on the team with 41 points. D’Amario is third on the team with 37 points and Dox Aitken rounds out the top scorers with 26 goals and 36 points. Goalie Griffin Thompson is saving 45.5 percent of shots in between the pipes and is posting a 12.10 goals against average.

North Carolina head coach Joe Breschi is in his ninth season at UNC and returns 36 letterwinners from last year’s 12-6 NCAA title squad. Chris Cloutier leads UNC with 19 goals and 27 points. Andy Matthews has the team lead in assists with 17. Luke Goldstock is second on the team with 18 goals, while Tim Kelly rounds out the top goal scorers with 12. Goalie Brian Balkam is saving 51.2 percent of shots he is seeing in the crease and posting a 9.05 goals against average.

UVA’s next game is the home finale on Tuesday, when Robert Morris comes to KlÃÆ’¶ckner Stadium. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
