No. 40 Virginia Downs Duquesne, Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The No. 40 Virginia women’s tennis team (9-10, 6-5 ACC) picked up a pair of victories on Friday (April 14), defeating Duquesne and Pittsburgh in a doubleheader at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Cavaliers defeated Duquesne (13-8) by a score of 6-1 in a morning match before rallying in singles play to defeat Pittsburgh (3-13, 0-12 ACC) in the afternoon match by a score of 5-2.
Virginia got singles wins in both matches from junior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.), sophomore Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine), and freshmen Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.).
Johanson is ranked No. 48 in the ITA women’s singles rankings, while Mercer is ranked No. 116.
Freshman Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas) won her only singles match of the day in competition against Pittsburgh, while junior Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia) split her two singles matches – winning against Duquesne before dropping a pair of tie-breaks in her singles match against Pittsburgh.
In the day’s first match Against Duquesne, the Cavaliers picked up the doubles point with wins from the duo of Mercer and Radosavljevic on court two, and the tandem of Bleser and Favero on court three, to secure the first point of the match.
Virginia then picked up singles wins on courts one through five on the way to the 6-1 victory.
In the day’s second match, Pittsburgh took the doubles point to pick up the early lead in the match with wins on courts one and three. The Panther pairing of Frey and Washington defeated the Cavaliers’ duo of Johanson and Kelley on court one, while the Virginia tandem of Bleser and Favero fell to Pittsburgh’s Knezevic and Rezende on court three.
The Cavaliers then stormed back in singles play with straight-set wins from Johanson, Bleser, Kelley and Mercer to secure the win. Favero then rallied through a three-set match for the final margin of victory.
The Cavaliers will continue play at Louisville on Sunday (April 16) when Virginia and the Cardinals compete at 11 a.m. Live stats will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
