CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team (23-1, 9-1 ACC) closes out the regular season by playing a pair of road matches in Florida, playing at Miami (8-11, 2-8 ACC) on Friday, April 21 at 3 p.m. and then finishing off with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, April 23 at No. 32 Florida State (14-9, 4-5 ACC).
Live scoring will be available for both matches with the links posted on VirginiaSports.com. Sunday’s match at Florida State is an ACC Network Extra contest that will stream live online on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
The Cavaliers are coming off a 7-0 win over fellow Atlantic region team Richmond on Tuesday, the fourth time in the last six matches the Cavaliers have swept their opponent. Senior Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) played No. 1 singles for the second-straight match, snapping UR’s Jacob Dunbar’s 18-match winning streak.
Virginia has five players ranked in the current Oracle/ITA singles rankings, led by senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.), the reigning ACC Player of the Week, who moved up to No. 12. Kwiatkowski is 8-2 in ACC matches this season and 21-5 overall.
Senior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.), ranked No. 125 in the Oracle/ITA rankings, comes into the match with 99 singles victories in his collegiate career, and will try to join Kwiatkowski in the 100-win club this weekend. Aragone is 27-8 in singles this season, including a 17-4 mark in dual matches.
Miami is coming off a pair of road losses at NC State and Duke last weekend. Piotr Lomacki is the only Hurricane player in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings, falling to No. 59 in this week’s listing. Lomacki is 11-7 this season in singles, including a win over North Carolina’s Ronnie Schneider.
Florida State has dropped five of its last seven contests, but is coming off a 5-2 victory over NC State last Saturday. No. 38 Aziz Dougaz is 14-8 this season with a 9-4 record at No. 1 singles. No. 74 Guy Iradukunda has a 20-13 singles record this season. No. 94 Lucas Poullain has won five-straight matches.
The postseason starts next week with the 2017 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship, taking place April 26- 30 at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga. The bracket for the ACC Championship will be announced on Sunday evening. The top four teams will receive a double-bye into the quarterfinals, which are scheduled to begin on Friday, April 28 at 10 a.m.
