CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia wrestling head coach Steve Garland announced 10 wrestlers who will be joining the program for the 2017-18 academic year when he released the 2017 recruiting class on Friday (May 12).

The recruiting class features four Top 100 recruits and six state champions. Virginia’s recruiting class has also been ranked among the nation’s best, ranking 10th by The Open Mat and FloWrestling, and coming as the 12th-ranked class by InterMat.

“I am so happy to finally be able to announce our full class,” Garland said. “I have been working really hard to finalize this group and make sure we finished up the spring by rounding out an already great group. I think this is one of the deepest classes we have every brought in. Last year’s group was an amazing group of kids and we tried to use them as my model of who to recruit for this cycle. I love this group. I really do. They will fit in really nicely here and add to a culture that we believe is already pretty strong”

The class features four wrestlers from Pennsylvania in Brian Courtney (Sayre, Pa.), Cam Coy (Jeannette, Pa.), Brian Kennerly (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and Drew Peck (Chambersburg, Pa.), and two Virginians in Michael Battista (Ashburn, Va.) and Sam Book (Fairfax, Va.). Also part of the class are Jake Keating (Naperville, Ill.), Scott Kiyono (Poway, Calif.), Jack Miller (Westfield, N.J.) and Quinn Miller (Lilburn, Ga.).

Virginia is coming off a season that saw the Cavaliers match the program’s second-best finish in NCAA history, placing 15th at the NCAA Championships as two wrestlers advanced to the semifinals in the same season for the first time for Virginia. A pair of wrestlers earned All-America honors, including returning 125-pounder and rising sophomore Jack Mueller (Dallas, Texas).
