LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Virginia women’s track and field team completed day one of the East Regional Preliminary Rounds on Thursday (May 25) in Lexington, Ky., at the University of Kentucky Track and Field Complex.

At the preliminary meet, each individual event (excluding the heptathlon and decathlon) has 48 competitors, while relays include 24 teams. The top 12 finishers from every event will move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, to be held in Eugene, Ore., on June 7-10.

Sophomore Marija Bogavac (Mojkovac, Montenegro) led the Cavaliers, finishing 13th in the javelin. She recorded a mark of 46.87m (153-9). Junior Caitlin Mautz (Doylestown, Pa.) and senior Christine Bohan (Avon Lake, Ohio) placed 21st and 22nd, respectively, in the event. Mautz recorded an effort of 45.09m (147-11), while Bohan recorded a distance of 44.84m (147-1).

“Great day for the women,” assistant coach Martin Maric said. “All of our women javelin throwers moved up from the rankings they came in with. They were little unfortunate to be in a group with the most unfavorable weather conditions. That stopped them from qualifying further to Eugene, but regardless they ended a very successful season with another great performance.”

Senior Heather Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded a time of 1:01.41 in the 400m hurdles. She placed 39th in the event.

East Regional Preliminary Rounds will continue tomorrow at 2 p.m.
