Lake Captures British National Title in 3000m Steeplechase

BIRMINGHAM, England– Former Virginia track and field athlete Iona Lake (Class of 2016) captured the national title in the 3000m steeplechase at the British World Championships Team Trials on Sunday (July 2).
Lake recorded her first British national title with a time of 9:57.53. Her performance was a season best as she led the race in the last 1000m.
The former Cavalier captured the lead at the 2000m mark, recording a split of 6:39.62. In her last 1000m, she ran a time of 3:17.91 to finish with a two-second gap over the second-place runner.
Also competing this weekend at the OECS Championships in Grenada, incoming freshman Halle Hazzard finished third in the 100m dash. She recorded a time of 11.76 for the bronze medal.
