CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The No. 13 Virginia men’s cross country team and the Cavalier women opened the 2017 season with the UVA Duals on Saturday (Sept. 2) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville.

The men’s team finished 1-1 defeating Norfolk State, 25-41, while suffering a loss to Liberty, 27-28. The women’s program defeated Liberty, 25-35, and Norfolk, 22-44, but lost to James Madison, 25-44.

On the men’s side, the Cavaliers recorded the two-fastest finishes from redshirt sophomores Ari Klau (Wes Hartford, Conn.) and Matthew Novak (Glen Allen, Va.), respectively. Redshirt sophomore Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.) finished sixth, while sophomore Thomas Amabile (Chesapeake, Va.) placed ninth. Redshirt sophomore John Pace (Chantilly, Va.) finished 12th to round out the scoring runs.

On the women’s side, senior Frances Schmiede (Sydney, Australia) led the race with the fastest run of the day, while graduate student Beth Hawling (Cheltenham, Great Britain) finished third. Senior Megan Rebholz (Stafford, Va.) and redshirt freshman Olivia Sargent (Yardley, Pa.) finished 13th and 14th, respectively. Sophomore Jill Bracaglia (Herndon, Va.) finished 30th.

Virginia returns to action when it hosts the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Sept. 23.
