Cavalier Women Win Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia women’s cross country team won the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 23) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville. Senior Frances Schmiede (Sydney, Australia) and graduate student Beth Hawling (Cheltenham, Great Britain) finished second and third, respectively.

The Cavaliers scored 41 points to top the field. No. 29 Yale took second place with 67 points, while SMU finished third with a score of 97.

“It was a good start to the day,” head coach Todd Morgan said. “It is difficult to tell exactly what we are going to look like until we line-up and the gun goes off, but the group has been working hard. I felt like the effort level and the focus was there. It was nice to see the way we came out and competed. We are excited to get back to work for three weeks before taking a shot in Wisconsin.”

The Cavaliers were paced by Schmiede with a time of 17:10.4 for second place. Not far behind, Hawling crossed the finish line with a time of 17:14.2 for third place. Sophomore Emma Call (Richmond, Va.) and junior Emily Mulhern (Ijamsville, Md.) finished eighth and 12th, respectively. Call recorded a time of 17:46.0, while Mulhern recorded a time of 17:49.6. Freshman Hannah Moran (Salem, Va.) debuted with a scoring run, finishing 16th with a time of 17.587.6.

Virginia will be back in action on Oct. 13 in Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational.
