Virginia Closes Day One At Big 5 Challenge

FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomore Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and junior Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) set the tone for Virginia with wins over nationally-ranked foes on day one at the Big 5 Challenge hosted by TCU on Friday (Sept. 22).

Playing in the top flight in singles competition, No. 34 Johanson picked up wins over a pair of ranked players, including the nation’s No. 6 player in Kate Fahey of Michigan. Kelley, who is ranked No. 124 in singles and is playing in the second flight of singles, also picked up a win over a nationally-ranked foe with a victory over No. 101 Sabrina Federici of Texas Tech. Both Johanson and Kelley went 2-0 on the day in singles.

Johanson and Kelley also paired up in doubles, going undefeated on the day in doubles with a pair of wins over top 10 doubles teams, including the nation’s top-ranked doubles team of Kate Fahey and Alex Najarian of Michigan.

Also competing for the Cavaliers on day one at the Big 5 Challenge in singles were seniors Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) and Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia), junior Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.), sophomores Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.) and freshman Lizzie Baker (Washington). Baker also paired up with freshman Maya Das (Potomac, Md.) in doubles action.

Play at the Big 5 Challenge continues on Saturday (Sept. 23) with Virginia players taking the court at 10 a.m. ET as round-robin play continues.
