PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia), a sophomore member of the Virginia women’s tennis team, begins play in the main draw at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday.

Ranked No. 34 nationally in the ITA singles rankings, Johanson makes her first appearance as a collegiate player in the prestigious event. The annual event is in its 33rd season at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Thursday’s competition is the culmination of a week of competition that began with pre-qualifying rounds this past Saturday. Virginia junior Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) advanced to the finals of the pre-qualifying rounds, while Virginia senior Cassie Mercer advanced to the semifinals of the qualifying rounds.

The event runs through the weekend with the championship match being played on Sunday (Oct. 8).

In addition to vying for the All-American national title, players will be competing to secure a berth into the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which takes place November 1-5, in Palm Desert, California. Singles quarterfinalists, consolation singles champion and finalist, along with doubles semifinalists and consolation doubles champion and finalist advance to the end of fall national championship.
