CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.), a junior on the Virginia women’s tennis team, split matches on Friday at the ITA Atlantic Regional in qualifying rounds of the event at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center at Virginia Tech.

Susi opened the day with a straight-set win over Natalie Sayer of Radford, defeating Sayer 6-3, 6-3. She then dropped her second match of the day to Vitoria Okuyama of William & Mary, 6-3, 6-3. The loss ended her run at the ITA Atlantic Regional.

Main draw competition in singles begins on Saturday. Doubles competition in the main draw also continues on Saturday with Virginia players seeing their first action as all three doubles teams for UVA received byes in Friday’s first round.

The Cavaliers have six players in the singles main draw, including five seeded players. Competing in the main draw for Virginia are top-seeded Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia), fourth-seeded Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.), fifth-seeded Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine), 13th-seeded Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia), 15th-seeded Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.).

Competing in doubles for the Cavaliers are the pairings of Johanson and Kelley (No. 1 seed in doubles), Radosavljevic and Mercer (No. 5 seed in doubles), and the duo of Favero and Gullickson (No. 8 seed in doubles).

The event winners in singles and doubles advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which serves as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule, is the only intercollegiate event to feature competitors from all five divisions competing for a national championship.

Through a combination of on-court competition and at-large berths and wild cards, there are several ways for student-athletes to qualify for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held November 1-5, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
