Cavaliers Continue To Advance At ITA Atlantic Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Members of the Virginia women’s tennis team continued to advance at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Sunday with two singles players and two doubles teams moving on to Monday’s matches. The event is being played at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center at Virginia Tech.
Sophomore Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and senior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) both picked up two wins in singles play on Sunday to advance to Monday’s (Oct. 16) quarterfinal matches. Johanson is the top-seeded player in singles, while Mercer is seeded fourth.
Johanson and Mercer also advanced in doubles competition as Virginia had two doubles teams also advance to the semifinals. Johanson paired with junior Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine), while Mercer paired with senior Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia). Both teams will play in the semifinals on Monday with the chance to face each other in the finals that same day. Johanson and Kelley are the top-seeded doubles team, while Mercer and Radosavljevic are seeded fifth.
The quarterfinal rounds in singles will be played after the conclusion of the day’s doubles matches.
The event winners in singles and doubles advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which serves as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule, is the only intercollegiate event to feature competitors from all five divisions competing for a national championship.
Through a combination of on-court competition and at-large berths and wild cards, there are several ways for student-athletes to qualify for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held November 1-5, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
