PALM DESERT, Calif. – Sophomore Rosie Johanson and junior Meghan Kelley picked up victories on Wednesday as the two members of the Virginia women’s tennis team advanced at the ITA National Fall Championships. The event is being hosted at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) won her singles match to advance to Thursday’s round of 32, while she and teammate Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) closed the day’s action with a doubles win to advance to Thursday’s Round of 16.

In first-round action, Johanson picked up a straight-set win, defeating Camile Gbaguidi of SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) 6-3, 6-2. She will now face second-seeded Ashley Lahey of Pepperdine. Lahey advanced after picking up a three-set win on Wednesday.

In doubles action, Johanson and Kelley, who are seeded fifth, defeated the Denver duo of Hada Chang and Julia O’Loughlin by a score of 6-2, 6-3. They will now face the Arkansas duo of Leolia Jeanjean and Giulia Pairone on Thursday.

The 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which serves as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule, is the only intercollegiate event to feature competitors from all five divisions competing for a national championship.
