KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- The Virginia men’s and women’s diving teams completed the first day of the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Wednesday (Jan. 3) at the Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

“It was nice to be back on the boards and compete again,” head diving coach Jason Glorius said. “I saw a lot of good things today against some tough competition that we will not see again until NCAAs. We need to be a little more consistent and crisper, but overall, we did really well. We’ll be better tomorrow.”

Junior Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) led the team, advancing to the finals of the women’s 1-meter dive. She finished ninth in the event with 269.85 points.

Sophomore Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Corey Johnson (Ambler, Pa.) finished 14th and 29th, respectively, in the preliminary rounds of the women’s 1-meter. Dusel recorded a score of 256.05, while Johnson recorded a score of 218.40.

In the men’s 3-meter dive, freshman Tristan Gess (Lakewood, Colo.) placed 32nd with 237.75 points.

The Cavaliers will return to action tomorrow for day two of the Tennessee Diving Invitational, competing in the men’s 1-meter dive and the women’s 3-meter dive. The competition will begin at 11 a.m.
