CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field team will open the indoor season at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday (Jan. 19) at the UI Recreation building in Iowa City, Iowa.

The meet will begin on Friday at noon and Saturday at 2 p.m. Iowa will host the meet as the Cavaliers compete against Florida State, LSU, Kansas State, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Arizona and Minnesota (W).

The Cavaliers enter as the lone men’s team inside the top 25, ranking 16th in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll.

On the women’s side, LSU ranks seventh, while Wisconsin ranks 11th, Minnesota ranks 13th, Iowa State ranks 14th and Kansas State ranks 18th.

Redshirt junior Oghenakpobo Efekoro (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior Hilmar Jonsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) were named 2018 Preseason All-Americans by FloTrack. Efekoro finished third at the 2017 Indoor NCAA Championships and fourth at the outdoor championships in the shot put, earning All-America honors at both. Jonsson finished fourth in the hammer at the outdoor championships, recording his first All-America honor.

The Virginia men placed 16th at the 2017 Indoor NCAA Track and Field Championships. In addition to Efekoro, the team returned sophomore Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica). Scott finished 10th in the triple jump at the national meet, earning second-team All-America honors.
