IOWA CITY, Iowa- The Virginia women’s track and field team concluded the first day of competition at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday (Jan. 19) at the UI Recreation building in Iowa City, Iowa.

“The mental side of the competition is so important in our sport,” director of track and field Bryan Fetzer said. “That is one aspect that a number of our women dealt with today. There were some positives and some had room for improvement. The weekend is about getting better in every way possible. Mia (Barron) was the most consistent she has ever been in her jumping series, which is super encouraging. For Holly (Sullivan), it is not easy to open your season with a full pent, but it serves as a great practice. It is even better to come away with a lifetime best performance.”

The Cavaliers had two performances rank on the school’s all-time freshman record list. In the weight throw, freshman Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) recorded a mark of 14.90m (48’10.75″), ranking fourth among first-year performances, as freshman Madelin Rennyson (Lynchburg, Va.) finished eighth in the 600m with a time of 1:36.87, ranking second in UVA freshman records.

Senior Holly Sullivan (Chester Springs, Pa.) finished third in the pentathlon with a score of 3,744, a personal best. Additionally, Sullivan record personal best performance in the in the high jump with a mark of 1.63m (5’4.25″) and the long jump with a mark of 5.72m (18’9.25″).

Junior Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) finished fourth in the long jump, recording a mark of 5.92m (19’5.25″), while senior Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) finished fourth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.70m (12’1.5″).

Junior Carly Feyerabend (Mechanicsville, Va.) led the Cavaliers in the high jump, recording a mark of 1.65m (5’5″). She tied for 12th in the event. Freshman Gabrielle Hayes (Woodbridge, Va.) tied for 19th with a mark of 1.60m (5’3″).

Sophomore Anna Jefferson (Warren, Mich.) finished sixth in the 600m premier race with a time of 1:34.48, while freshman Halle Hazzard (Commack, N.Y.) finished 10th in the 200m dash with a time of 24.96 and junior Alana Herran (Orange, N.J.) finished 17th in the 600m with a time of 1:41.82.

Virginia will conclude the meet tomorrow with events beginning at 2 p.m.
