IOWA CITY, Iowa- The Virginia women’s track and field team concluded the final day of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 20) at the UI Recreation building in Iowa City, Iowa, with Halle Hazzard (Commack, N.Y.) setting a freshman record in the 60-meter dash.

“The beginning of the year is pretty standard,” director of track and field Bryan Fetzer said. “Our more experienced athletes typically perform well and the younger ones ride the roller coaster. We have some talented young ones that showed promise. Time to learn from it and get better.”

Hazzard recorded a time of 7.54 in the 60m dash, setting a freshman record and tying for seventh on the UVA all-top marks list. She finished eighth in the event.

Freshman Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) earned a mark of 14.94m (49’0.25″) in the shot put to finish ninth at the meet. Her mark ranked second in UVA first-year performances and seventh on the school’s all-time performance list.

Junior Kelly McKee (Lenexa, Kan.) and senior Mia Barron (Minnetonka, Minn.) finished third and fifth, respectively, in the triple jump. McKee captured a mark of 12.77m (41’10.75), ranking 17th nationally, while Barron recorded a mark of 12.49m (40’11.75″), ranking 28th nationally.

In the 60m hurdles premier group, junior Ciara Leonard (Elkins Park, Pa.) advanced to the finals, recording a time of 8.58 and placing eighth overall. Sophomore Alexis Woodley (Chesapeake, Va.) finished 10th in the prelims with a time of 8.56. In the Olympic development group of the 60m hurdles, junior Alana Herran (Orange, N.J.) finished ninth, recording a time of 8.97

Again racing in the finals of an event, Leonard finished sixth in the 60m dash for the Olympic development group. She recorded a time of 8.09 in the event.

Freshman Madelin Rennyson (Lynchburg, Va.) recorded a time of 2:18.62 in the 800m, finishing 10th, while Woodley finished 15th in the 60m dash with a time of 7.91.

The Cavaliers will compete at the Liberty Kickoff beginning on January 26 in Lynchburg, Va.
