NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Virginia (1-2) women’s tennis team dropped its opening match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, falling to Florida State (2-1) by a score of 4-1 at the Currey Tennis Center at Vanderbilt on Friday.

Despite being an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent, the match counts as a non-conference match for the season record. Virginia will face either No. 2 Vanderbilt or Nebraska in the consolation match at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday. Fans can follow the match through live video and results linked at VirginiaSports.com.

The Seminoles took the doubles point to start the match, winning on court two before the No. 14 pairing of Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) would win on court one. Florida State then clinched the doubles point with a win on court three to head into singles play with a 1-0 lead in the overall match score.

Florida State extended the lead in the overall match score, picking up a win on court five in singles before the Cavaliers would get on the board with a win on court three from Kelley. The junior, who is ranked No. 111 in the ITA singles rankings, defeated Petra Hule by a score of 6-2, 6-3.

The Seminoles would then clinch the match with wins on courts one and two. The remaining matches on courts four and six went unfinished.
