BOONE, N.C. – Freshman Brian Courtney (Sayre, Pa.) won his weight class to lead three Virginia wrestlers who placed in competition at the Appalachian Open on Saturday (Jan. 27). Fellow freshmen Cam Coy (Jeannette, Pa.) and Quinn Miller (Lilburn, Ga.) also placed for the Cavaliers.

All three freshmen are in a redshirt season for the Cavaliers.

Courtney improved his season record to 17-9 on the season as he went undefeated through four matches on the way to the title at 141 pounds. Along the way, Courtney posted a pair of bonus-point victories, including a tech fall over Hunter Reed of Campbell and a major decision over Davion Fairley of Chattanooga.

Coy wrestled up at 165 pounds and posted a 4-1 record through the Saturday event on the way to a third-place finish. The freshman posted a pair of bonus-point wins before falling to Mehki Lewis of Virginia Tech for his only loss on the day. He then pushed to two more wins in the wrestlebacks for his podium finish.

Miller finished fourth at heavyweight, posting a pair of wins by fall on the way to his podium finish. He pinned Brady Gilliland-Daniel of Arizona State and Sam Bouis of VMI for his two wins on the afternoon. Miller medically forfeited his final match of the day against North Carolina’s Andrew Gunning.
