Virginia Women Earn USTFCCCA Academic All-America Honors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Virginia women’s cross country team was named as a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic All-America team, as announced by the organization on Friday (Feb. 9). Senior Frances Schmiede (Sydney, Australia) and graduate student Beth Hawling (Cheltenham, Great Britain) earned individual USTFCCCA academic honors.

Schmiede earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships after capturing the fourth-fastest time from an individual not on an advancing team at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. She finished 42nd at the NCAA Championships as well as earning All-Southeast Region Team honors with a seventh-place finish at the regional meet. At the ACC Championships, she placed eighth and was named to the All-ACC team and was also named to the All-ACC Cross Country Academic Team.

Hawling recorded the second-best finish for Virginia at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships and the ACC Championships. She finished 14th at the Southeast Regional meet and ninth at the conference championships, earning All-Southeast Regional Team and All-ACC Team for her performances, respectively. Hawling was also named to the All-ACC Cross Country Academic Team.

The women’s team earned All-Academic Team honors for recording a cumulative grade point average of 3.29 for the 2017 fall semester.

A minimum GPA 3.25 was required for student-athletes to be eligible for the individual award, in addition to finishing in the top 25 (or 10 percent) at the regional site or earning All-America honors at the NCAA Championships.
