CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.Va.) was named the ACC Co-Player of the Week on Tuesday, the league office announced with the release of its weekly honors.

Mercer received the recognition after helping the Virginia women’s tennis team post a 4-2 upset of No. 14 Michigan over the weekend. It marked the first win over a nationally-ranked opponent under first-year head coach Sara O’Leary. It was also the first win over a top 25 team by the Cavaliers since the 2016 NCAA Tournament when Virginia defeated No. 3 North Carolina to advance to the Elite Eight.

In Friday’s match against the Wolverines, Mercer played two singles and picked up a win over No. 56 Chiara Lommer of Michigan. The Cavalier senior fought through a tight first set, dropping it 7-5 in a tiebreak. She then stormed back in the match, winning the next two sets in dominant fashion to secure the win for Virginia.

Mercer defeated Lommer 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-1.

The win propelled the Cavaliers into the national rankings as Virginia is No. 23 in the ITA Women’s Tennis rankings also released on Tuesday afternoon.
