Virginia Records Two Podium Finishes to Open ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 23 Virginia swim team concluded the first day of competition at the 2018 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, finishing third in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.

After the first day of competition, Virginia is in eighth place with 121 points. NC State paced the opening day with 158 points, followed by Florida State in second place with 157 points, Duke in third place with 147 points, North Carolina in fourth place with 143 points and Virginia Tech in fifth place with 140 points.

“Great start to the meet for the guys,” head coach Todd DeSorbo said. “Just here trying to have fun and outdo ourselves. Two podium finishes out of two relays is amazing after not one from the entire meet last year. This is just the start for a program that belongs, and will be, among the nation’s elite.”

Virginia opened the competition with a school record in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Joe Clark (Worcester Park, Great Britain), freshman Keefer Barnum (Louisville, Ky.) junior Bryce Keblish (Fairfield, Conn.) and senior Luke Georgiadis (Jacksonville, Fla.), respectively, recorded a time of 1:24.69 for third place.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, sophomore Ryan Baker (Arlington, Va.), freshman Samuel Schilling (Excelsior, Minn.), Georgiadis and freshman Cooper Wozencraft (Houston, Texas) placed third with a time of 6:19.80. The performance was a season-best for Virginia, dropping over 16 seconds from its previous time of 6:35.89.

The Cavaliers will return to action tomorrow with preliminary races beginning at 10 a.m. and final events beginning at 6 p.m.
