Virginia Men Advance Ten Swimmers to NCAA Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Ten members of the No. 23 Virginia men’s swimming and diving team qualified for individual events at the 2018 NCAA Championships which will be held at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn., on March 21-24. Additionally, the Cavaliers qualified four out of five relay teams.
Virginia will be represented by senior Luke Georgiadis (Jacksonville, Fla.), redshirt junior Brendan Casey (Santa Monica, Calif.), juniors Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.), Bryce Keblish (Fairfield, Conn.) and Sam Magnan (Bethlehem, Pa.), sophomores Joe Clark (Worcester Park, Great Britain) and Ted Schubert (Ashland, Va.), and freshmen Keefer Barnum (Louisville, Ky.), Robby Giller (Wilton, Conn.) and Matthew Otto (Newark, Del.).
Fong advances to the NCAA Championships for the third time in his career after competing in the 200-yard butterfly in 2016 and the 100- and 200-yard butterfly in 2017.
Making their second NCAA appearance, Clark and Schubert both qualified for the national meet last season. Clark competed in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, while Schubert participated in the 100-and 200-yard butterfly.
Keblish and Georgiadis were part of the 2017 relay teams at the NCAA Championships. Keblish swam with the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Georgiadis raced with the 800-yard freestyle relay team, the 200-yard freestyle relay team and the 400-yard freestyle relay team. Both Keblish and Georgiadis earned a berth for individual events at the NCAA Championships for the first time in their careers.
Five Cavaliers will participate in the national meet for the first time, including three freshmen.
Virginia will compete in four out of five relay competitions. The Cavaliers will participate in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the 200-yard medley relay, the 400-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
The final sessions will be streamed on ESPN3.com on Friday and Saturday. The remaining sessions will be broadcast on www.gophersports.com.
